HOLLY LESTER

Label AFFILIATIONS: Duality Trax

Over the last decade, Holly Lester has become an authoritative figure in UK and Irish dance music. Whether making music, DJing, advocating for the local scene or running her label Duality Trax, the Belfast resident and Free the Night co-founder is always seeking to give back. This is the culture she comes from, where a desire to strengthen community stands firm and central.

The influences flowing through her musical universe include house in all its forms, particularly sub-genres that emerged in the early 2000s, with aspects of elemental Irishness that relate to land, folklore and mythology humming in the undercurrents.

Playing across two decks and two CDJs, she mixes old and new, digital files and 12” records found digging in stores worldwide, embodying a commitment to the culture – and to labels that continue to press vinyl.

Holly Lester started DJing across rural Northern Ireland and England’s North West as a teenager. Residencies followed (Chibuku Shake Shake; The Warehouse Project) as well as repeat bookings at Belfast’s legendary Shine. Her 2018 Boiler Room at Belfast’s AVA Festival launched an international career touring Europe, Australia, Indonesia, and the South Caucasus.

The island of Ibiza is almost literally in her DNA; her parents met in San Antonio in the summer of 1988. She made her own way there as a worker, cementing her love of underground house and techno on the terrace at Space in 2012. She’s since played everywhere from beach bars to DC10, held a residency at Sankey’s Ibiza and, more recently, hosted for OpenLab radio.

After three years with DIY station Limbo Radio in Manchester, she’s appeared on Rinse, Balamii, SWU.FM, and BBC Radio Ulster. She’s now scheming new ways to broadcast essential cultural stories from her home County of Armagh and from the North more generally.

Never one to use momentum simply for her own benefit, Holly Lester used her increasing profile to nourish the grassroots by setting up a label, Duality Trax, with the intention to ensure a gender balance across releases. Established in 2020, the label has showcased artists from across Ireland, the US and Europe, building relationships between kindred spirits in LA, Tallinn, Amsterdam and Berlin.

Since making the long-awaited transition into production, her commitment to connection through music and movement has entered a new, intentional cycle. Debut EP ‘Open Your Mind’ reflects twenty years behind the decks, reworking aspects of progressive, dubstep, garage and early tech-house into her own unique style.

Free the Night illustrates Holly Lester’s role as a cultural instigator, earning her a DJ Magazine Underground Hero nomination in 2021. Yes, she’s an unmissable DJ, balancing driving percussion with warm, heads-down grooves. But she’s also taking the government of Northern Ireland to court, an act which resulted in a 2026 BBC mini doc about her campaigning.

In short, Holly Lester is a central part of a powerful DIY movement. And that includes using her artistry to communicate, contribute and champion the communities that made her.
